from Vignole Borbera to Cantalupo Ligure

Description

To discover the Bobera Valley adequately, our journey starts from Vignole Borbera, in the lower part of the valley, at an altitude of 243 metres. Considered the ''door'' to the valley, this town has had intensive manufacturing activities as evidenced by the cotton mill built in the 19th century right above the structure of the old mill. From a historical point of view there are several buildings of great interest like the Castle, a fortress built to protect the territory, the Parish Church of St. Lawrence the Martyr and the Benedictine Abbey of St. Peter of Precipiano founded between 616 and 636. Among the typical products, we recommend the Fagiolana, cultivated in numerous towns of the Borbera valley. These beans belong to the white variety from Spain and are of two kinds: the Quarantina (the early kind) and the Tardiva (the late kind). From Vignole we proceed to Borghetto of Borbera, a pleasant village resort where we can indulge in excursions to the different summits such as the Ebro, Chiappo, and Antola. There are also numerous monuments to visit like the Castle of Torre Ratti, the Abbey of St. Peter and the Church of Our Lady of the Snow, which offers a magnificent view. The next stop is Cantalupo Ligure where we can admire the Strait of Pertuso, a canyon carved by the Borbera River. We take this opportunity to taste some of the local products like the Carla apple, a special local variety.
