from Viù to Usseglio

Description

Our journey on the discovery of the Viù Valley starts from the municipality of Viù, which is made up of 34 districts distributed throughout a very large area. A holiday resort with important historic buildings like Villa Franchetti and the Parish Church of San Martino, the territory of Viù and its districts have lush forests of chestnut and beech trees, especially towards the hills of St. John. The municipality is part of the Nature Park of Col del Lys defined by the presence of very rare plant species like the Euphorbia gibelliana (Irish Spurge). Inside the park, there is a monument that commemorates the fallen guerrilla fighters and the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Bassa. The examples of historic buildings are particularly interesting such as the benal (roofs made from rye hay) while towards the outskirts of the valley, in the midst of Pian Bausano, Castagnole and Maddalene there are terraced vineyards. We continue our journey to the territory of the municipality of Lemie in the central part of the valley. On the highest point of the promontory where Lemie is located, we find the Parish Church of St. Michael the Archangel while the district of Gaiera is home to the hyroelectric power plant constructed in the early 1930s. At Forno di Lemie you must visit the Chapel of St. Julius and the historic bridge (1477) made up of two arches. The last municipality of the valley is Usseglio where the regional trade fair of the Toma cheese of Lanzo and other mountain pasture cheeses is held every year.
