The Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies, with the modification of the decree of 18/12/2017 through the decree of 29 April 2024, with the aim of promoting correct information to students of school age, on the principles of sustainability of organic agriculture, promoted the consumption of organic and environmentally sustainable products in school canteens by defining the requirements, including the minimum percentages of use of organic products, the technical specifications necessary to qualify the school lunch service as an organic canteen, to encourage the consumption of environmentally sustainable organic products and to reduce food waste.
To translate and support these aims, the Ministry has also made funds available for organic school canteens to reduce costs for families and carry out information and promotion initiatives in schools.
To make these indications practical actions, the Piedmont Region has renewed the collaboration agreement with the Unioncamere Piedmont to carry out, in the regional territory, information and food education initiatives on organic farming in the three-year period 2023 - 2025, with the involvement of the Turin Chamber of Commerce Chemical Laboratory.
Thus, 27 videos were created at 9 ORGANIC educational farms with the aim of simulating company visits, to talk about the main Piedmontese organic crops and the related supply chains, as well as various information materials.
The recipients of the initiatives are both pupils and schools, for food education and information activities, and municipal administrations and contracting authorities, which manage the school lunch service, to provide them with information on the requirements and technical specifications that the school canteen must satisfy to be qualified as organic, in addition to the organic educational farms involved in information and education initiatives aimed at students.
