from Dronero to Elva
Description
A town deeply connected to the figure of Giovanni Giolitti, Dronero is the starting point of our itinerary along Maira Valley. A visit to the historical centre reveals beautiful views like the magnificent Devil's Bridge, the porticoes and the Foro Frumentario market. Among the economic activities which characterized the past of Dronero, it is important to mention that link to anchovy sellers to whom the municipality dedicates a festival every year. A stopover at a café in the historical centre is the chance to taste a small glass of Genepy liqueur or Giolitti biscuits related to the homonymous statesman who used to bring them with him during his journeys to Rome. Once we turn left to Dronero we go on along Maira valley, stopping at Celle di Macra to taste the Toma of Celle, a fresh cheese made of cow's milk. Celle Macra, consisting of 18 hamlets, is the starting point for interesting itineraries which are part of the Varaita Upper Valley Eco-museum's project (the municipalities involved are Macra, Celle di Macra, Elva and Prazzo). From Celle Macra we head to Stroppo where, in the Paschero hamlet, we find a beautiful gothic steeple whereas the 12th-century Saint Peyre Church is of great interest. The Church is part of the Mistà Circuit which includes other 12 churches. From Stroppo we arrive at the wonderful municipality of Elva that can be reached also from the Orrido road (after Bassura di Stroppo hamlet) or from Varaita Valley across the Sampeyre Hill. Borgata Serre is the main centre of Elva, where we find the St Pancrazio Parish Church which preserves frescos by Hans Clemer, and the Hair Museum. If you visit Elva in summer you will be fascinated by the wonderful alpine landscape rich in blooming meadows, pinewoods and rich lush pastures. A stopover in Elva can be the chance to taste the precious Sambucano lamb (raised in Stura di Demonte Valley and adjoining valleys) and the Toma cheese of Elva, a semi-fat straw-coloured cheese, the taste of which reminds us of alpine herbs.
