from Borgo San Dalmazzo to Pietraporzio
Description
We start from the city of the Cold Festival, Borgo San Dalmazzo, to discover one of the most beautiful valleys of the Cuneo area: the Stura Valley. The famous Cold Festival which takes place every year in December is traditionally linked to the Alpine Helix Pomatia Snail (Snails of Borgo San Dalmazzo) which lives exclusively on the calcareous massifs of the Cozie Alps' southern slope. Borgo San Dalmazio is not only about snails: a visit to the historical centre reveals important monuments such as San Dalmazio parish church (11th century) and the Civic Tower. Of great historical and memorial interest is without doubt the Deportation Memorial which recalls one of the most tragic pages of the 20th century. We leave Borgo to reach Demonte, an important municipality of the lower Stura Valley, characterized by a beautiful town centre with huge medieval porticoes. The area of Demonte is part of the special protection area of Stura di Demonte, particularly interesting for its environment and nature. Worthy of mention are also the Vallone dell'Arma and Mulo Hill which, from Demonte, connects Stura Valley with Maira Valley. The next stopover of our tour is Vinadio, a well-known tourist destination of Upper Stura Valley with its beautiful Albertino Fort, Sant'Anna Sanctuary (the most elevated in Europe) and the Thermal Baths. From Vinadio it is possible to reach France through the Lombarda Hill, a very fascinating alpine crossing located at an altitude of 2,350 m. From Vinadio we head to Sambuco, the name of which is linked to an important variety of sheep: the Sambuco breed. These sheep (from which come the renowned Sambuco Lambs) have been living for a long time and are bred, in the municipalities of the Stura Valley and two other bordering valleys, at an altitude ranging from 600 to 1,800 m. In the high pastures of the surrounding area, ancient stone buildings with barrel vaults covered with soil and called las trunas are still present. The last stopover of our tour is Pietraporzio, a municipality consisting of several villages and an obligatory transit area to Maddalena Hill. The Sheep-farming Eco-Museum in Pietraporzio is worth a visit. It is an important experiment desired by the Mountain Community to strengthen the sheep farming activity, especially connected to the relaunch of the Sambuco sheep. The museum is hosted in a building located in the village of Pontebernardo.
