from Sampeyre to Pontechianale
Description
Sampeyre, located at an altitude of 1,000 m and an important tourist centre, is the starting point of our itinerary to discover the Upper Varaita Valley. If you happen to be there in the right year, you will be lucky enough to see one of Varaita Valley's most famous festivals: the Baio Festival, a commemoration of the expulsion of the Saracens. Those who love medicinal herbs will find a lot of enterprises that turn these precious natural products into delicious infusions. After Sampeyre we go on in the direction of Casteldelfino, an important centre of the Upper Varaita Valley and capital city of the area of Castellata, which was the administrative Canton that also included Pontechianale and Bellino municipalities. In Casteldelfino there are many interesting activities, especially related to hiking: from the old town centre to the Alevè Wood, and the Votive Pillars to the old bakeries. Alpine cheese lovers can savour the Nostrale d'Alpe, a traditional cow's milk cheese produced during the summer, with a sweet and aromatic taste combined with excellent alpine honey. We continue our trip and before arriving in Chianale, we can detour to the side valley where the municipality of Bellino is located. Formed by many hamlets, Bellino hosts every year an important festival dedicated to the alpine culture: Les MontagnArts. In Borgata Celle you should visit the interesting Time and Sundials Museum, a unique museum in Italy dedicated to gnomonic art. We move on towards Pontechianale, the last municipality of the valley on the border with France and which can be reached through the Agnello hill. Once past the dam we head to Chianale, the beautiful village that preserves a town centre full of must-see places such as the Church of San Lorenzo, Church of Sant'Antonio and many beautifully restored stone houses.
