from Ceva to Caprauna
Description
Our itinerary in Upper Tanaro Valley follows the road that brings us to the Nava hill on the border with Liguria. We leave from Ceva, an important town with an old medieval centre and significant baroque religious buildings such as Francesco Gallo's St Mary and St Catherine Archconfraternity Church. Whoever arrives at Ceva can't miss tasting the delicious mushrooms to which every year, the city dedicates an important Exhibition, without forgetting the Festival of St Lucia dedicated to Piedmont cattle. From Ceva we continue to Bagnasco, the village of Bal do Sabre (an ancient popular dance) and of the white bean, a climbing variety almost exclusively used for grain production. At the start of the Tanaro Valley, the surrounding land is characterized by majestic beech forests which are part of the Bagnasco Wood area, acknowledged as a Site of Community Interest. A few minutes later we arrive at Garessio where we can have a break at the Park of St Bernard Thermal Baths or visit the historical part of the town (this municipality is part of the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy and Sustainable Villages of Piedmont) with Casotto Castle, the Saracens' Tower, the Jhape Door, St John's Church Portal and countless churches. Once we have left Garessio, after having tasted its buckwheat polenta, we set out for Ormea, a city with a characteristic heart-shaped town centre. A stroll along the central Roma Street is an occasion to discover a charming maze of alleys ("trevi"), but also to have a gourmet break at a tavern and taste the buckwheat polenta and the Sola, a mountain pasture raw cheese with mixed whole milk. We end our trip in Caprauna, a small district of Pennavaira Valley known for its delicious Caprauna turnip, a vegetable with fleshy root from which we can obtain two types of turnip: the yellow and the white ones.
