from Vigone to Pancalieri
Description
Our journey begins in Vigone, a city at the crossroads between the Pinarolo and Saluzzo areas, and precisely in its historic centre, rich in interesting monuments like the Sillano Palace, Church of Santa Maria de Hortis and Rotonda (an icehouse of 1835 completely restored). The antique springs which were recently restored, are of great interest: not only in the naturalistic but also in the agricultural and aquacultural sense. In the past, many of these springs were used as nasors, (hemp macerators) to soften up the fibres. From Vigone we proceed to Cercenasco to taste the Lamprey, a kind of small eel that lives in the surrounding hand locked lakes. The next stop of our journey is Piobesi Torinese to visit the Parish Church of St. John, a magnificent religious structure from the 10th century, and the Castle which was transformed into residences in the 1800s. After leaving Piobesi we proceed towards Carignano, a city that is part of the River Park of the Po, Turin section, rich in historic buildings that testify to its medieval and baroque past. A visit to the historic centre should include the Duomo (cathedral) built in the 18th century, ST. John Square, Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the Charity Hospice and Valinotto Chapel, a masterpiece of Bernardo Antonio Vittone. But Carignano is also a city of rich gastronomic proposals like the Zest di Carignano (candied orange peels produced since the 16th century) and the Topinambur (Jerusalem Artichokes) celebrated every year in October with the Sagra del Ciapinabò (festival of the Jerusalem artichokes). We end our journey in Pancalieri to visit the Mint Museum, an outstanding product of the territory where the Essential Mint Oil of Pancalieri is obtained through the distillation of peppermint. Every year the municipality holds Viverbe, an important exhibit dedicated to the mint leaf and other officinal herbs.
