from Forno Canavese to San Benigno Canavese
Description
The journey we are about to take starts from Forno Canavese (we are in the Mountain Community of Alto Canavese), the territory of which stretches along the valley of the Viana River reaching the highest summit of Mount Soglio (1,971 m). Its name immediately betrays its origin, which is linked to the numerous furnaces used in the production of lime. Aside from the high altitude pastures, the territory contains hilly and mountainous vegetation like oaks, chestnuts and birches. In the valley of Canavese we can sample excellent local cheeses like the Tomino Canavesano. For those who love stronger flavoured cheeses, one can opt for the Brus dal Latte, often seasoned with chilli and peppers. From Forno Canavese we proceed to Corio to have a taste of the Wild Boar Salami, a type of salami aged for a short period of time and prepared with wild boar meat, lard and bacon. We continue on to Vauda Canavese where the Vauda Nature Reserve is found and is distinguished for its wide flat areas with ponds and lakes. Last stop is San Benigno Canavese, the history of which is closely related to the monumental Abbey of Fruttuaria founded by Guglielmo di Volpiano in 1003.
