from Trino to Saluggia
Description
The second tour on the discovery of the Vercelli plains starts at the municipality of Trino, where we also find the Sorti della Partecipanza Wood Park and the majestic Abbey of Lucedio. The first was called a "raft floating on the rice fields" given that it is a hill in the Vercelli plain between the Po, the Dora Baltea and the Sesia Rivers. Woods, natural springs and small mounds are all that remain of the lower Vercelli wood, following the anthropisation of farming activities, the reclamation works and the creation of the grange, the monastic communities that depended on the Lucedio Abbey. The latter is the other great testimonial of the Trino landscape: founded in 1123 by the Cistercian monks who undertook the reclamation works on the territory by introducing rice farming. The Abbey is a magnificent complex reflected in the placid waters of the rice paddies. From Trino we move on to Fontanetto Po, rice farming center of great importance and which is part of the Po River Park. We highlight the Old Rice Mill Ecomuseum of San Giovanni and the Norman-style Church of San Martino, while the salami enthusiasts may taste some Goose Salami. Continuing our journey to Crescentino which forms, with the municipalities of Fontanetto Po and Lamporo, are part of the Union of Municipalities of the Grangia Vercellese rice farms. If the Civica Tower is the symbol of the old heart of the city, as we move away from the centre we find splendid testimonials of the past like San Genuario, where the Tizzoni Castle stands and also the Abbey with the same name. From a naturalistic viewpoint, we must take note of the Special Nature Reserve and Safeguard of the San Genuario Swamp, with its valuable fauna. The last stopover is Saluggia where we stop to discover the Saluggia Bean, an indigenous variety of the zone to be tasted with the typical Vercelli Panissa dish.
