from Cossato to Biella

Description

The term baraggia indicates a territory characterized by wide grasslands and moors that occupy a vast area between Biella and Vercelli. The journey we are about to take is relative to the area between Cossato and Biella. And it is from Cossato that we start our journey with a visit to the Church of Sts. Peter and Paul, situated in the grassland plains not far from the Castle of Castellengo. The Eco-museum of Cossato and of the grasslands, is of great interest and is dedicated to the rural culture. For pastry lovers, at Cossato they can sample the Mantovane of Cossato, which is made with puff pastry stuffed with almonds and jam. We leave Cossato to travel towards the next stop of our journey which is Mottalciata, one of the municipalities that is part of the denomination Rice of the Grasslands of Biella and Vercelli an area (there are 28 municipalities in the provinces of Biella and Vercelli)very suitable for the cultivation of several varieties of rice such as Arborio, Baldo, Balilla, Carnaroli, S. Andrea, Loto and Gladio. At Mottalciata there are still some remains of Motta Castle of the Alciati and a primitive shelter; furthermore the municipality is part of the Hilly Community between Baraggia and Bramaterra whose main product is Rice and wine, in particular the Bramaterra produced at the Villa del Bosco, Sostegno, Lozzolo, Curino Roasio, Brusnengo and Masserano. We continue our journey in the grasslands of Biella till Salussola and immediately after to Verrone, another locality that has a beautiful and refined castle, which belonged to the Vialardi family, we continue onwards to Gaglianico where we find one of the most beautiful and better preserved castles of Biella. Before we get to Candelo we stop by Borriana to sample the Torta `d Ravisce a savoury quiche prepared with turnip leaves, milk and stale bread accompanied by a good glass of Coste della Sesia wine. A little further on is Candelo, thanks to the presence of a magnificent fortress perfectly intact. This fortress dates back to between the 1200s and 1300s and was used by the population as a warehouse for agricultural products. The territory of the municipality Candelo is part of the vast area of "Orientata" Nature Reserve of the Grasslands called Baraggione, an area of about 5,000 hectares of on whose plateau Bellavista one can enjoy the magnificent view of all the Alps from Monviso to Mount Rosa. We recommend the Eco-Museum of Grape Growing and Wine Making situated right inside fort. The final leg of our journey is the capital of the province of Biella. It is situated at the mouth of the Elvo, Oropa and Cervio Valleys and the city is structured with two main centres called Piazzo (seat of the aristocratic palaces like the Cisterna Palace and Ferrero Della Marmora Palace) and the other is called Piano, which was built in the 1600s when the market and the municipal buildings were transferred. We recommend the Baptistery built in the 10th century, a stupendous example of Romanesque-Lombard art and the Special Nature Reserve Park of Burcina Felice Piacenza. Our journey ends with a gastronomic stop over: Biella and its inhabitants offer a rich array of local products linked to the territory like the Paletta, a delicious salami made from the scapula muscle of the pig or the Tigrini, which are pastries stuffed with chocolate cream and rum.
