from Villar Focchiardo to Novalesa

Description

We start our journey to the Lower Susa Valley at Villar Focchiardo, an agricultural town which prides itself with many local products such as the prized Chestnuts from the Susa Valley and the Sweetbread of Meliga and Mele, a kind of sweet flatbread made from corn flour, russet apples, and other ingredients. Some sites of great interest are: the Certosa di Monte Benedetto (the abbey of Mount Benedict) and the stronghold, Cascina Roland that now houses a museum. Next stop is Chianocco, a town made up of many districts rich in fascinating nature sites like the Ravines (the municipality is part of the Orsiera-Rocciavrè Natural Park where the Nature Reserve of the Chianocco Ravine and the Foresto Ravine are found). After leaving Chianocco, we proceed to Mattie, the origins of which are lost in the mists of time, as evidenced by the rock carvings in the district of Menolzio or the Menhir della Pera dou Rei. At Mattie we take the opportunity to sample some local products typical of the Susa Valley like the Salame d'Asino (donkey salami) and the prized Prosciutto Crudo (dry cured ham). Here we are finally at Susa, an ancient Roman and medieval city situated strategically where the river, Dora Riparia, joins the Cenischia and controls the direct access to the Moncenisio and Monginevro passes. There are many testimonies to its glorious past, from medieval fortifications to Roman Aqueducts, from the Celtic altar to the Roman Amphitheatre, and from the Park of Augustus to the Porta Savoia, giving us a glimpse of the history of a grand city. Last stop is Novalesa, a stunning resort in the Cenischia Valley, to admire the magnificent Abbey founded in 726.
