from Alessandria to Novi Ligure

Description

Alessandria was officially founded on 3 May 1168 and will be the starting point of our journey up to Novi Ligure. Let us then start from the elegant historic centre and in particular from Borgo Rovereto, the heart of the old city, with the Church of St. Mary of Castello that dates back to the 9th century. Some of the historic buildings like the Red Palace, Cathedral of St. Peter, Arch of Triumph, Fortress of the Savoy and Garibaldi Square are of great charm. There are also numerous museums from the Ethnographic to the River Museum, and from the Marengo Museum dedicated to the historic victory of Napoleon over the Austrians in the 1800s to the Antiquarian of Villa del Foro, a multimedia archaeological journey in the Roman archaeological site of the Fulviis Forum. Before we leave Alessandria, we should sample a local dish of this area (in particular of Cascina Grossa, Litta Parodi, Mandrogne and Spinetta Marengo): the Rabatòn. It is a kind of dumpling shaped like a green cigar, the main ingredients of which are ricotta, eggs, chard, grated cheese and breadcrumbs. We leave Alessandria and proceed to Castellazzo Bormida, the old Gamondio, which still retains the layout of the pre-municipal walls. The outstanding local products include the Red Chard, the Scorzonera (black salsify) and the Pumpkin, evidence of a very fertile territory where there are still many farmhouses sprinkled in the countryside, a big number of which have an annexed church. Next stop is Bosco Marengo, the city which had the honour of hosting Napoleon Bonaparte during his first campaign in Italy in 1796. We recommend visiting the Monumental Complex of the Holy Cross and All Saints and the Church of St. Anthony the Abbot. We end our journey in Novi Ligure to sample some local products of Alessandria, the famous Canestrelli, doughnut-shaped cookies made with wheat flour, sugar, and olive oil. The historic centre is full of great charm and gives us glimpses of its rare beauty like the Piazza delle Piane where the Collegiate Church of St. Mary Major is located. Before leaving Novi Ligure we must sample another local product, the Focaccia Novese, flatbread with characteristic holes on the surface that prevent the oil from falling off and keep the flatbread particularly soft and flavourful.
