from Gavi to Ovada

Description

The Gavi municipality known for the production of a white wine with the same name and with the denomination of controlled and guaranteed origin, is also the seat of a magnificent medieval fortress, the Gavi Fortress, that has witnessed innumerable battles including those of Napoleon, and is currently under the guardianship of the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage. Land of wines and as a consequence of gourmet proposals, Gavi gives us a chance to sample the famous Ravioli accompanied by a great glass of Dolcetto di Ovada. After leaving Gavi we proceed to Rocca Grimalda, a medieval village situated on a ridge on the left bank of the River Orba. The Castle, with original construction dating back to the 13th century, and the Church of St. Limbania are both of great interest. The last stop of our itinerary is Ovada, a few kilometres from the border of Liguria, and the name of which is linked to Dolcetto and the famous Biscotti della Salute (health biscuits), dry, crunchy toasted bread, prepared with wheat bran flour, sugar, yeast and salt. A visit to the historic centre with its numerous ''carrugi'' or alleyways, reveals the strong influence of nearby Liguria.
