from Biella to Rosazza
Description
The Cervo Valley is about 20 kilometres long and is a major player in this journey that starts from Biella and will lead us until Campiglia Cervo. It is structured on two centres (Piazzo and Piano) Biella is the crossroad of three valleys that defines this territory: the valley of the Elvo River, the Orpo Valley and the Cervo Valley. As our first visit to Biella, we dedicate precious time at the Special Nature Reserve Park of Burcina Felice Piacenza: it is a garden created in the last century by the owner of the area, Felice Piacenza, who transformed this hill into a park. Take note of the Himalayan rhododendron and some examples of exotic coniferous. From Biella we continue our journey along the Cervo Valley. The first stop is Andorno Micca the town of the famous Ratafià a liqueur made from the concentrated syrup of black cherries. After Adorno we proceed towards Pralungo situated a few kilometres from Biella. In this territory they produce Beddo, which is a tomino cheese made with cow's milk much appreciated for its organoleptic qualities. The town lies by the Oropa River and the starting point for our pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Oropa. There are mule tracts that have been beaten by pilgrims during processions. The Sacred Mountain of Oropa is a very important site and is part of the Sacred Mountains (a Unesco heritage site). It is part of a natural landform (the basin of Oropa) where the Special Nature Reserve of the Sacred Mountain of Oropa is found. For those who love to sample typical local products, we recommend Pan d'Oropa rectangular sweet bread made from cocoa. But the valleys of Biella offer many excellent products like the Maccagno cheese and the Rice Sausage a poor man's sausage made with boiled rice, pork rind, bacon, salt, garlic, wine and pig's blood. Next stop is Quittengo, a town linked to the extraction of syenite (a local stone) widely used in the construction of civil works. We continue our journey till we reach Campiglia Cervo considered the administrative heart of the valleys. There we also find the Shrine of St. John the Baptist, next in importance after that of Oropa. From Campiglia there is a panoramic road called Tracciolino that leads all the way to Andrate. Next we proceed till Rosazza, a holiday destination that has had a significant boost from the efforts of Senator Federico Rosazzo in the last thirty years of the 1800s. You must also visit the Home Museum.
