The Food Districts identify local production systems, which are characterized by a specific homogeneous historical and territorial identity and integrate agricultural activities and other entrepreneurial activities, in line with the traditions of the places of cultivation.
The aim of the Food Districts is to promote the enhancement of agricultural and agri-food production and at the same time the rural landscape of Piedmont. In this way, more subjects of a given territory are favored: from the production chain to the local tourist and cultural offer.
Furthermore, the Food Districts must guarantee food safety by reducing the environmental impact of production, reducing food waste and safeguarding the territory through agricultural and agri-food activities.
Public bodies, institutions and companies participate in the Food Districts, whose cooperation can favor, for example, the promotion of local products abroad and the tourist offer. Furthermore, the collaboration between small and medium-sized agricultural and agri-food companies is able to increase the competitiveness of the companies themselves through cost reduction and innovation.
Food Districts are established following a specific application through an agreement between public entities and private entities that operate in an integrated manner in the local production system pursuant to the Regulation for the territorial identification, establishment, recognition and operation of new food districts approved by the Regional Council of Piedmont on 13 November 2020.
